Calligraphy Chair

Furniture Prototype

Chinese calligraphy is made throuh subtle changes in the direction, angle, and acceleration of a brush. Such motions produce a system of stroke widths and ink grains that turn handwriting into an art form. This rocking chair captures a similar movement: the swaying of a body in motion. The curved back is angled such that the chair can roll back 45 degrees before the shape of the wood gradually stops itself. Each piece of structure is a brush stroke, of laminated maple rather than ink. The spacing of the strokes cushions the body quite comfortably.
