Place de l’Indepéndance

Plaza
Dakar, Senegal

The Place de l’Indepéndance in Dakar is an enormous public space in Senegal’s capital, and the historic venue for major revolutionary protests. But you wouldn’t know that when you visit—it appears relatively blank and innocent. This redesign brings the history of colonial subjugation and the self-started independence movement back into the public conversation by combining memorial, prayer, and protest functions across two stacking ground planes.
