If a design is too specific to its original function, it can’t easily adapt to a new use in the future. This building confronts that issue by clustering its most permanent rooms into a structural spine running the length of the site. Because it contains only permanent building services, the spine withstands future renovations. Use-specific spaces are hung off the sides, leaving an outdoor walkway on the terrain below. An opening in the spine allows this promenade to cut right through the building, weaving together landscape, sidewalk, and architecture.
