The living room of this small apartment needed additional storage, so I constructed a custom built-in along a windowless wall. After removing existing wainscoting, the wall was painted matte gray to contrast with the burnished maple millwork. Open shelving holds books and plants, with LED lighting that casts a warm glow on the wall behind. A permanent air conditioner is concealed by photographs but can be easily accessed for the few days of the year it’s in use. At the bottom, enclosed cabinetry separates electronics and office supplies from curious pets, while the bench above tilts upward to become a desk.
